TEAS Test Breakdown

The TEAS, Test of Essential Academic Skills, is offered through the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI), a private testing company based in Overland Park, Kansas. It is intended to assess entry-level verbal and math skills that have been deemed by a board of curriculum experts to be appropriate for nursing school applicants. The TEAS is offered in both traditional paper-and-pencil and computer-administered formats. All of the questions appearing on the TEAS exam are multiple-choice with four options per question (i.e., A, B, C and D). The following table shows the content distribution and time allocations for the exam:

Detailed Breakdown:

In the reading questions on the TEAS, a candidate may be shown a reading passage, or may be given some sort of image such as a chart, map, diagram, or graph. Candidates are then asked two or three questions based on information pertaining directly to the image or passage. The questions may require the test-taker to do any one of the following:

·       Identify the main idea of the passage

·       Locate important details

·       Draw a conclusion based on the passage

·       Apply a conclusion to a new situation

·       Identify the author’s tone or attitude

·       Identify the meaning of a word based on its context

Another form of reading comprehension involves following directions. Candidates are given a set of step-by-step instructions that they are to follow to arrive at an answer. For example, the directions may indicate how to draw a particular geometric figure, which the test-taker must follow to correctly answer the question. Once all the steps have been completed, the candidate is then asked which of four given diagrams most resembles their drawing. If the directions were followed correctly, the candidate will select the correct answer.

Mathematics questions on the TEAS cover the topics of rounding, measurements, ratios and proportions, fractions and percents, basic algebra, operations, and interpreting data from graphs and diagrams. Many of the questions are word problems based on everyday situations such as banking, shopping, paying bills, etc.

Science questions on the TEAS cover science reasoning and science knowledge.  Topics include life science (living systems, evolution, and similar topics), human anatomy and physiology, chemistry (atomic structure, compounds and solutions, and similar topics), and physics (force, motion, and similar topics). In some of the questions, the candidate may be asked to interpret charts, diagrams, or similar graphics.

English and Language Usage

English and Language Usage questions on the TEAS cover punctuation, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary in context.
